The Conditions of Christian Minorities in Indonesia (1925-2000)
Abstract
Abstract:
Indonesia is one of the Asian Islamic countries that suffered greatly under the control of the foreign Dutch occupation. The struggle against this occupation was led by many prominent figures, most notably Ahmed Sukarno. Indonesia is known as an Islamic country, and Islamic parties led the struggle until it gained independence. The ideas of these parties gradually crystallized until independence was achieved and the modern state was built on the foundations of Islam.
These parties led the building of democracy and development in Indonesia, based on Islamic identity. Other religious minorities, namely Christians, lived alongside Muslims in the same homeland. Islam preserved freedom of religion and worship, as well as peaceful coexistence. The research addresses the state's approach to coexistence and guaranteeing the rights of all minorities, including Christians.
